When you're ready to start your Apprenticeship, here is a list of tools you will be responsible for at the job site

We recommend American-made tools that will last throughout your entire career

Pre-Apprentice Tool List:


  • Tool Pouch

  • Belt (suitable for a tool pouch)

  • Pencil

  • Pocket Knife

  • Flashlight

  • Padlock for Lockout/Tagout

  • Channel Lock Pliers: 2 pairs, #420 or equivalent (grooved, not slip-joint type)

  • 9” Side Cutting Pliers

  • 3/16 x 4” Screwdriver

  • 1/4 x 6” Screwdriver

  • #2 Phillips Screwdriver

  • #3 Phillips Screwdriver

  • Electrician’s/Claw Hammer (fiberglass handle preferred)

  • Hacksaw Frame with blade storage

  • Torpedo Level: 9” magnetic

  • 6’ Wooden Folding Rule (inside reading)

  • 2-Lead Non-Adjustable Voltage Tester

Inside Journeymen/5th Year Tool List:


  • Crescent Wrench: 10” adjustable

  • 7” or 8” Diagonal Slide Cutting Pliers

  • 6” Long Nose Pliers (Needle Nose)

  • Chalk Line

  • Toolbox or Tool Bag (large enough to hold all your tools)

Pre-Apprentices with less than 2,000 hours of on-the-job training
are only required to provide the tools listed above the line.
